ElevenLabs is an AI voice platform that converts text to speech, clones voices from audio samples, and provides API access for developers building voice-enabled products. The company serves three distinct audiences: individual content creators, developers integrating voice into applications, and enterprise teams doing audio production at scale.

The core text-to-speech product takes written text and generates an audio file in seconds. Quality depends on the model you use. The pricing page now lists Eleven v4 alongside v3. The expressive models handle emotional delivery and pacing more naturally than the earlier Multilingual V2, while the Flash models process faster and cost fewer credits, useful when speed matters more than subtle tone accuracy.

ElevenLabs also sells an API, and its Flash models are aimed at real-time uses like AI agents and interactive products.

The Voice Library has more than 10,000 community-created voices available to all users, on top of ElevenLabs' own catalog. The pricing page lists 74 languages for text-to-speech on every plan. Studio, the long-form editor, allows 3 projects on the free plan and 20 on Starter.

ElevenLabs estimates about 1 minute of speech per 1,000 credits, so Starter is roughly 30 minutes and Creator roughly 121 minutes. Heavier models use more credits per character, so if you work mostly on the newest expressive model, plan for less than the headline minutes.

Credits now roll over. Unused credits carry forward for up to two months, so your balance can reach three times your monthly quota, as long as you keep a paid plan. Downgrading or cancelling forfeits the rollover.

Starter is $6 per month, with the first month at $1. Creator is $22 per month, with the first month at $11. Scale ($299, 3 seats) and Business ($990, 10 seats) are team plans.

The commercial rights restriction on the free plan is the most important detail before signing up. Anything you monetize (YouTube videos, paid courses, client work) needs at least the Starter plan at $6 per month.

Voice quality varies based on which model you use and what type of content you are producing. For narrated content — explainer videos, audiobooks, podcast intros — the expressive models produce output that most listeners cannot distinguish from a recorded human voice.

Where AI voices still fall short is on content requiring strong emotional range — heated arguments, sharp sarcasm, genuine surprise. The newer models handle mild emotional variation better than earlier ones, but the delivery sounds calibrated rather than felt. ElevenLabs requires consent verification before cloning a real person's voice. The system flags public figures and blocks cloning attempts on well-known voices. ElevenLabs is the default choice for most creators because the $6 Starter plan delivers commercial rights and top-tier voice quality at a price most alternatives charge just for basic access. But it is not the right fit for every use case.

Murf AI is worth considering if you need to produce finished video content in one tool — its Studio lets you add a video and sync the voiceover to it on a timeline, which ElevenLabs does not. Do not use ElevenLabs if your use case is consuming text rather than producing audio. If you want to listen to articles, PDFs, or emails at speed — a reading aid rather than a production tool — Speechify is built for that purpose with 55 million users. ElevenLabs is a content production tool, not a listening tool.

Do not pay for the Creator or Pro plan if you are still testing the concept. The free plan gives 10,000 credits per month, about 10 minutes of speech, enough for five or six short videos. Start there, verify quality works for your content type, then upgrade.
