Descript Pricing 2026: All Four Plans, from $16/month

The ladder runs: free for evaluation, Hobbyist for light regular use, Creator for active solo creators, and Business for teams.

One detail the plan page understates: the free plan's 100 AI credits are a one-time allocation, not a monthly reset. Once they run out, Underlord AI features stop working until you upgrade. This matters if you are evaluating the AI tools before deciding whether to subscribe.

Descript sells time, so the cleanest way to compare plans is the price of one media hour. Media hours count the length of everything you upload or record in Descript, including Rooms sessions (counted once per session, not once per participant); a still image counts as one second. Allowances are per editor and reset each billing cycle without rolling over.

On yearly billing Creator is the cheapest by a wide margin: $24 for 30 hours is $0.80 an hour, against $1.25 on Business and $1.60 on Hobbyist. Business costs more per hour than Creator, so its extra 10 hours are not the reason to buy it; the reasons are Brand Studio, dubbing, custom avatars, priority support and up to 5 seats. These are full-use figures. A Hobbyist who records 3 hours a month is paying $5.33 an hour in practice.

Top-ups price media time differently. Extra hours are sold in bundles of 5, 20 and 50 for $25, $80 and $150, which is $5, $4 and $3 an hour, more than any plan's own rate. Top-ups are available only on Creator and Business, last 12 months, are spent only after the monthly hours run out, and are non-refundable. A Hobbyist who needs an eleventh hour cannot buy a top-up and has to upgrade, and anyone who tops up every month would pay less by moving up a plan.

Count raw recording time, not finished episode length. A weekly show with four 45-minute episodes is 3 media hours a month, and 6 if you record 90 minutes of raw tape per episode. A creator who records 20 minutes of footage every day is at 10 hours.

On hours alone, Hobbyist covers a weekly show. Descript's own guidance is more cautious: it describes Hobbyist as the plan for one or two projects a month, Creator as the plan for about one a week, and Business as the plan for several a week or for a living. The two views split on credits and quality, not hours. Creator adds 4K export, doubles the AI credits to 800, makes the stock media library unlimited (Hobbyist shows the first 12 search results) and unlocks top-ups.

The upgrade is cheap. Hobbyist to Creator on yearly billing is $8 more a month for 20 more hours, twice the credits and 4K. Past 30 hours, Creator plus one 5-hour top-up is about $49 for 35 hours, while Business at $50 gives 40 hours and 1,500 credits, so a sustained 35-hour month is where Business starts to pay off if you also want its team features.

Hours and credits are per editor and pooled across a drive's editor seats. A three-editor Creator drive on yearly billing costs 3 x $24 = $72 a month and gets 90 media hours and 2,400 AI credits.

AI credits are the meter for Descript's AI features. Per Descript's help center they are spent on Underlord (the AI co-editor), Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words, Green Screen, Eye Contact, AI speech and voice clones, avatars, generated video and generated layout packs. Unused credits do not roll over: the allowance resets when the subscription renews.

Descript does not print a price per action, but it does document how the costs behave. When you apply a tool by hand, the cost scales with the length of the job and the same input costs the same every time; generative tools cost more on more advanced models. Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words are capped at 30 credits per file or tool application, so a long recording never costs more than 30 credits for either. Underlord is less predictable: a request can cost different amounts depending on the model it picks and how much work it does, and even chatting with it costs a few credits per message. The Usage tab in the app settings shows what each run cost.

That gives a usable ceiling for a podcast workflow. Applying both Studio Sound and filler word removal once per episode on four episodes a month costs at most 2 x 4 x 30 = 240 credits, which fits inside Hobbyist's 400 with room left for Underlord. Video generation, avatars and heavy Underlord use are where credits go fastest, and that is where Creator's 800 matters.

When you reach the limit, Descript shows a message, and you either wait for the renewal or, on Creator and Business, buy a top-up. Credit top-ups are 350 credits for $35, 1,000 for $80 and 4,000 for $200 ($0.10, $0.08 and $0.05 per credit). They last 12 months and are spent only after the monthly allowance. Hobbyist and the free plan cannot buy them.

The annual versus monthly comparison has a specific quirk worth knowing. The Hobbyist monthly rate ($24/month) is exactly the same as the Creator annual rate ($24/month). For identical monthly spend, committing to Creator annually gives you 30 transcription hours instead of 10, 4K export instead of 1080p, 800 AI credits instead of 400, and access to the full stock media library.

If you are currently paying Hobbyist month-to-month, the math strongly favors switching to Creator annual at the same price point rather than renewing Hobbyist.

Annual savings by plan:

For a 3-person team on Business, the annual billing difference alone saves $540/year. If you are not certain you will use Descript for a full year, start on Hobbyist monthly and reassess after two months of use.

**Weekly podcaster, one or two hosts:** Hobbyist at $16/month is the right fit. A 45-minute episode uses about 45 media minutes. At 10 hours per month, that covers a twice-weekly release schedule with editing passes to spare. The 400 monthly AI credits handle Studio Sound and filler word removal on each episode without approaching the cap, since each is capped at 30 credits per use.

**Active YouTube creator, 1–4 uploads per week:** Creator is the more appropriate tier. The 30-hour transcription allowance, 4K watermark-free export, and full stock media library match the output requirements of a regular channel. At $24/month on annual billing ($288/year), it is competitively priced for the feature depth it provides in the podcast and video editing category.

**Small video team, 2–5 editors:** Business at $50/user/month annually adds Brand Studio, translation and dubbing into 30+ languages, custom avatars, and priority support. A 3-person team pays $1,800/year. The value case is real for teams producing multilingual or branded video at volume — it is narrow for teams that simply want shared project access without those specific features.

Do not use Descript for cinematic or effects-heavy video production. It is a text-based editor built for spoken content — podcasts, interview recordings, screen captures, and talking-head videos. Color grading, multi-camera switching, motion graphics, and complex B-roll timelines are outside its design. For AI-assisted cinematic production, Runway is the right category.

Do not pay for a Descript plan if your only need is transcription output — converting speech to text, exporting a document, and moving on. At $24/month for Creator, Descript is expensive relative to dedicated transcription tools that cost $8–15/month for the same output. Do not upgrade from Hobbyist to Business as a solo creator. The Business-only features — Brand Studio, dubbing into 30 languages, custom avatars — serve specific team or agency workflows. Most individual creators have no practical use for any of them, and the per-seat cost makes the jump difficult to justify.

**Lifetime deal.** We found none. Descript's pricing page lists only monthly and yearly subscriptions, and its help center does not mention a lifetime plan; the only one-time purchases it sells are top-ups for extra media hours and AI credits. If a third-party site advertises a lifetime Descript license, confirm it on descript.com before paying.

**Free trial.** Descript lists no trial of the paid plans. The free plan is the trial: no credit card is needed, and it gives 60 media minutes a month and 100 one-time AI credits. The nearest thing to a paid trial is the refund window. Descript refunds a plan purchase within 48 hours of the invoice date and an extra editor seat within 7 days, and it does not prorate refunds when you cancel or downgrade partway through a term. Promo codes work only once, on a new account upgrading from free to paid.

**Student, educator and nonprofit pricing.** It exists, and it is the only discounted plan Descript sells. It costs $8 per editor a month billed yearly, or $12 billed monthly, and includes everything on Hobbyist, with up to 3 editor seats. It is open to 501(c)(3) nonprofits or the equivalent, and to students, educators and administrators at accredited schools. You sign up with a school or nonprofit email, add a payment method (you are not charged yet) and submit Descript's application form for review. For a student that is half the $16 Hobbyist price.

**Enterprise.** Priced by quote, with SSO, SCIM, custom legal terms and a dedicated account manager. Teams of up to 5 editors fit on Business instead.

For most users, the choice is between Hobbyist and Creator, and the number that settles it is raw recording hours per month: up to 10 fits Hobbyist at $16/month (annual), and above that Creator at $24/month is the cheaper way to buy hours at $0.80 each. Creator at $24/month (annual) makes sense when you need 4K output, more transcription hours, or heavier Underlord AI feature use.

Business is a team plan. As a solo creator, the per-seat pricing and team-specific features do not justify the cost for the vast majority of workflows.
