And if you are on a Pro plan ($100–$500/month) and your main use is writing or basic research, you are almost certainly overpaying. The Plus plan at $20/month covers what most people use day to day.

If you need to run structured, automated tasks without human input — batch processing, workflow automation, or integrations that require precise control over parameters — the OpenAI API is a better entry point than the chat interface. The API is built for production workflows; the chat interface is built for conversation. And for anyone who needs serious image editing beyond basic generation — precise masking, layer control, or photorealistic compositing — a purpose-built tool like Adobe Firefly will outperform ChatGPT's built-in image generation on those specific tasks.
