What Midjourney does

Midjourney generates images from text descriptions. You write a prompt — a description of what you want to see, optionally including style references, aspect ratios, and quality settings — and Midjourney produces four image variations in under a minute. You then upscale, vary, or remix the result.

The output quality is the highest in the consumer AI image category. Where [ChatGPT](/tools/chatgpt)'s built-in DALL-E 3 and Stable Diffusion produce competent results, Midjourney produces images with painterly coherence, intentional composition, and aesthetic deliberateness that makes them look less like AI outputs and more like art direction. How prompting works

Midjourney prompts follow a loose structure: subject, environment, style, and technical parameters. A prompt like "a woman sitting at a café table, golden hour light, shot on 35mm film, shallow depth of field --ar 4:5 --v 6.1" will produce something very different from "a woman sitting at a café table" alone.

The --ar flag controls aspect ratio. The --v flag specifies the model version. The --s flag controls stylisation (how strongly Midjourney applies its aesthetic vs following the prompt literally). The --q flag controls rendering quality and speed.

The most useful prompt technique for new users is referencing real visual styles: photographers, art movements, film stocks, or specific artists. "In the style of a 1970s National Geographic photograph" or "gouache illustration, flat colours, editorial" give Midjourney enough aesthetic direction to produce coherent results without writing a long detailed prompt.

Midjourney also supports image prompting — you can paste a URL to an existing image as part of your prompt, and Midjourney will blend your text description with the visual style or composition of that reference image. The practical difference between Midjourney and DALL-E 3 is quality versus accessibility. It understands natural language prompts well, so "a golden retriever puppy sitting on a red sofa" produces a reliable result without learning any syntax. For quick mockups, illustrations for documents, or images where good-enough is fine, DALL-E 3 is the faster path.

Midjourney produces better-looking images, consistently. The colours are richer, the composition is more intentional, the overall aesthetic is more considered. For anything going in front of an audience — campaign visuals, social content, product imagery, illustrations for publication — the quality difference justifies the additional subscription.

The workflow gap is also significant. DALL-E 3 is one step in a ChatGPT conversation. Midjourney requires joining a Discord server, learning slash commands, and managing outputs in a channel. Which Midjourney plan is right for you

Midjourney has four paid tiers, and the right one depends entirely on how many images you generate per month. Basic at $10/month gives 200 fast generations. That covers casual personal use — roughly 6–7 images per day — but runs out quickly if you are iterating to find the right composition for a project.

Standard at $30/month adds unlimited relaxed generations alongside a larger pool of fast GPU time. Relaxed mode queues your request during off-peak hours and typically completes in 5–10 minutes rather than under a minute. For a designer who generates images throughout the workday, Standard is the practical floor. You save fast hours for time-sensitive work and use relaxed mode for everything else.

Pro at $60/month adds stealth mode — your generations do not appear in the public Midjourney feed. This matters for client work and unreleased campaigns where confidentiality is required. It also adds more fast hours. Mega at $120/month is for studios or heavy volume users with very high monthly generation needs.

Annual billing cuts each tier by 20%. Who should not use Midjourney
