What Writesonic does

Writesonic is an AI writing tool aimed at freelancers, bloggers, and small businesses that produce content regularly. It does three things reasonably well: generates first drafts for SEO articles, produces short-form marketing copy from templates, and lets you chat with an AI assistant (Chatsonic) that can browse the web for current information.

It is not the best at any one of these things. [Claude](/tools/claude) writes better prose. [ChatGPT](/tools/chatgpt) has better web browsing. [Jasper](/tools/jasper) has better brand voice tools. Writesonic's case is that it does all of them at $20/month with a free tier, making it accessible to creators who cannot justify $49/month for Jasper or who are not yet sold on Claude.

Chatsonic is the most distinctive piece. Unlike standard ChatGPT, Chatsonic browses the web in real time using Google Search integration — so it can answer questions about news from this week, not just events before the model's training cutoff. That distinction matters if your content covers topics that change quickly: software pricing, policy changes, product launches.

Photosonic is image generation built directly into Writesonic — powered by Stable Diffusion. You describe an image in plain text and it generates it inside the same interface. No switching to Midjourney or DALL-E. The output is serviceable for blog header images and social posts; it is not competitive with Midjourney for quality, but the convenience of having it in one place is real.

Botsonic is a no-code chatbot builder that trains on your own data — PDFs, URLs, plain text files. You point it at your content and it builds a widget you can embed on your website as a customer support assistant. Small businesses with a FAQ-heavy product can deploy a functioning support bot without writing code.

The template library covers 100+ formats: ad copy, product descriptions, email sequences, press releases, YouTube scripts, LinkedIn posts. They live in the sidebar and take a keyword or short brief to produce a first draft.

The SEO article writer

Writesonic's most useful feature for its core audience is the Article Writer. You enter a keyword, choose a tone, and it generates a structured article with headings, an intro, and body sections. The output is functional but generic. It tends to produce articles that are structured correctly — with the right headings and keyword density — but that read like they were written by someone following a formula. You will need to rewrite at least 40–50% of the output to make it worth publishing.

For freelancers who are billing for word count rather than quality, or who are producing content at high volume and working within thin margins, this formula works. For anyone trying to build a site with content that stands out, the output needs substantially more work.

Article Writer 6 — the current version — runs in four steps. You enter your target keyword. Writesonic generates five headline options for you to pick from or edit. It then builds a full outline with suggested headings and asks you to approve or adjust it. Only after you confirm does it write the body, section by section. This staged workflow means you are reviewing structure before the words get written, which saves time compared to regenerating a full article that went in the wrong direction.

Before writing, the SERP Analyzer fetches the top 10 Google results for your keyword and shows each competitor's word count, readability score, and heading structure side by side. You can see in one screen whether the top-ranking articles average 1,200 words or 2,800 words — useful for calibrating how long your article needs to be to compete.

If you have a Surfer SEO account, Writesonic can export your draft directly into a Surfer document for content score optimisation before you publish. The two tools are separate subscriptions, but the integration removes the copy-paste step.

One caveat: Article Writer uses real-time web sources to inform the draft, but it still hallucinates citations. Statistics and quotes should be verified manually before publishing. Writesonic does not flag uncertain claims — it states them as fact.

Chatsonic — AI with web access

Chatsonic is Writesonic's ChatGPT equivalent — an AI chat interface that can browse the web. The web access means it can answer questions about current events and find recent information, which standard AI models cannot without a search tool.

The quality of Chatsonic's responses is below what you get from Claude or ChatGPT Plus. It is fine for quick lookups and basic questions. It is not a replacement for a more capable model on complex tasks. Chatsonic also supports image generation and voice input, which gives it more surface area than a plain text chat interface.

Pricing

Writesonic's free plan gives you 10,000 words per month and access to 25+ templates, including Chatsonic. That is enough to test the article writer on two or three target keywords before committing money.

The Individual plan is $20/month on annual billing ($29/month month-to-month). It raises the limit to 100,000 words per month, unlocks Article Writer 6, and includes Botsonic with one chatbot. This is the plan most freelancers and solo bloggers land on.

The Teams plan runs $30 per seat per month on annual billing. It adds a shared workspace, multi-user collaboration, brand voice settings that carry across seats, and priority support. For a team of three, that is $90/month — approaching what you would pay for a Claude Team or ChatGPT Team plan, both of which have better underlying models.

Word credits are not a 1:1 ratio with words generated. A 1,500-word blog article costs roughly 3,000 to 4,000 credits depending on which model is used. GPT-4 costs more credits than GPT-3.5 for the same output length. If you are on the Individual plan and primarily use GPT-4, 100,000 credits translates to roughly 25 to 30 full articles per month.

Annual billing saves approximately 31% versus paying monthly — the largest discount in this category. Jasper's annual discount is around 20%. If you plan to use Writesonic consistently, annual is worth committing to.

Who should use Claude or ChatGPT instead

If quality matters more than SEO template structure, [Claude](/tools/claude) at $20/month is a better use of the same budget. Claude produces more natural prose and follows complex instructions more reliably. The trade-off is that you are working with a general-purpose assistant rather than a tool built specifically for SEO content.

If you need web browsing in your AI workflow, [ChatGPT](/tools/chatgpt)'s free plan includes it. Paying $20/month for Writesonic primarily to get Chatsonic's web access is not efficient when that feature is free in ChatGPT.
