What Sora does

Sora generates video from text descriptions. You write a prompt describing a scene, camera movement, and visual style, and Sora renders a video clip of up to 20 seconds. The output quality is the highest available in the consumer AI video category — Sora handles physics, lighting consistency, and character motion more reliably than competing models.

Sora is available to [ChatGPT](/tools/chatgpt) Plus subscribers at $20/month, with a limited monthly generation allocation. ChatGPT Pro at $200/month gives higher limits for heavy users. There is no standalone Sora subscription — you access it through ChatGPT.

The practical differentiator from [Runway](/tools/runway) is that Sora prioritises generation quality over editing capability. Runway Gen-3 Alpha generates shorter clips (up to 10 seconds) but pairs that generation with a full suite of editing tools: background removal, inpainting, style transfer, and frame interpolation. Sora generates longer, higher-quality clips but provides no editing tools alongside them. You generate a clip and take it elsewhere to edit.

For creative professionals, the workflows are complementary rather than competing. A filmmaker might use Sora to generate high-quality establishing shots and atmospheric footage, then edit those clips in Runway or a conventional NLE like DaVinci Resolve. Using both tools together gives access to higher quality generation (Sora) and editing capability ([Runway](/tools/runway)) in the same production.

What makes Sora's quality different

Sora's technical architecture was designed around world simulation — the model attempts to understand and reproduce how physical objects move and interact, rather than simply predicting visually plausible pixel sequences. The practical result is that Sora clips have more consistent physics than earlier AI video models: objects do not randomly morph between frames, lighting is consistent across a clip, and character movement follows more natural patterns.

This does not mean Sora is perfect. Complex scenes with many interacting characters, fast action, or detailed hand and face close-ups still produce inconsistencies. A wide shot of a person walking through a market looks convincing; a close-up of two people shaking hands often breaks at the point of contact. These are known limitations across all current AI video models — Sora is better than alternatives but not solved.

The 20-second clip length is a practical advantage over [Runway](/tools/runway)'s 10-second maximum. For a film editor building a sequence from AI-generated footage, twice the clip length means fewer cuts and less generation time to cover the same screen time. This matters less for standalone clips but is a real workflow improvement for longer-form projects.

Sora's prompt interpretation is also strong at handling camera direction: "slow dolly in on a fog-covered mountain lake at sunrise, 35mm film look, overcast soft light" produces a recognisable result without extensive prompt engineering. Sora vs Runway

Sora and [Runway](/tools/runway) are the two primary AI video generation tools at the professional level, and they have different strengths that make them complementary more often than they are direct alternatives.

Sora produces higher-quality individual clips. The physics consistency, lighting coherence, and clip length (up to 20 seconds) give it a quality ceiling above Runway Gen-3 Alpha for isolated footage. If you need one excellent clip, Sora is more likely to produce it.

Runway produces a better complete workflow. Background removal, inpainting, frame interpolation, and style transfer are all available inside Runway — none of them are available in Sora. A filmmaker who generates footage and then needs to composite it, colour-grade it, or remove unwanted elements needs to leave Sora entirely to do that work. In Runway, much of it can happen in the same platform.

Cost comparison: Sora is included in [ChatGPT](/tools/chatgpt) Plus ($20/month) with limited generations. Runway Unlimited is $95/month for unlimited use. How to access Sora and what the limits are

Sora is available at sora.com and is integrated into the [ChatGPT](/tools/chatgpt) interface. ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) includes Sora access with a capped monthly generation allowance — the specific number of generations is not published but is described as a "relaxed" limit for casual use. ChatGPT Pro at $200/month gives significantly higher generation limits described as suitable for heavy creative work.

Generation speed is a practical consideration. Sora clips take 2–5 minutes to generate at standard quality, longer at higher quality settings. Generating a 20-second clip at full quality can take 10+ minutes. This pace is not compatible with the rapid iteration that Midjourney enables for image generation. If your workflow requires fast feedback loops — generate, evaluate, adjust, regenerate quickly — plan for Sora's generation speed to be a limiting factor.

Sora does not have a mobile app — it is web-only. The interface is cleaner and more accessible than Runway's, which reflects the fact that it is a generation-only tool without the complexity of Runway's editing suite. New users can generate their first clip in a few minutes without tutorials.

Generations from Sora include a visible watermark on the Plus plan. The Pro plan removes the watermark for commercial use. If you are using Sora for client work or published content, the Pro plan's $200/month price point needs to be considered against the generation volume you actually need. For most individual creative professionals, Plus with occasional Pro upgrades is the practical entry point.

Who should not use Sora

Do not use Sora if you need avatar or presenter videos. Sora generates cinematic footage — it does not produce a person speaking from a script. If your video need is a spokesperson presenting to camera, Sora is not relevant.

Avoid Sora if you need editing tools alongside generation. Sora generates clips and nothing else. If your workflow involves removing backgrounds, changing colour grades, or removing unwanted elements from AI-generated footage, you need [Runway](/tools/runway) alongside or instead of Sora. It is not the right choice if the $200/month Pro plan is not in your budget and you need high-volume output. The Plus plan's generation limits are not published but are clearly intended for moderate personal use, not production pipelines. Heavy commercial use requires Pro.

And do not use Sora if you want consistent character generation across multiple clips. Current Sora and all AI video models struggle to maintain the same character appearance across clips generated separately.
